TWO MORE BEAD FAIRS – that’s 7 so far this year

July Norwich Bead Fair
Norwich Bead Fair July 2021The Norwich shows are usually packed, but this one was a little quiet after the first couple of hours. That Sunday was the hottest day of the year to date. Although it was freezing in the hall with two new air-conditioners blasting.

Norwich Bead Fair 2021July’s never a good month for shows, but with lockdowns, we like to book ’em in when we can! We’ll back in Norwich on 10th October, ready for making your Christmas jewellery.

Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair
Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair July 2021Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair July 2021Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair July 2021Thank you everyone who visited, making this the best Gem n Bead Fair ever – we made a killing! Because of an 18-month gap from a bead fair in London, the show was very busy both days.

Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair July 2021Kempton Park Gem n Bead FairThe hall looked very tidy, if a little strange, with lots of empty space to compile with the council’s social distancing regulations. There were only about half the usual exhibitors as some had been pinged and others not ready from lockdowns. But the atmosphere was as electric as hematite icicles.

Pictures are entry queue Saturday morning – and in Yum Yum Chinese Restaurant: Johnny from Southampton Bead Shop, Nigel from MrBead, Sarah from Terra Bella Jewellery, and Andrew from Monty’s Beads. MiMi took the photo!

See a short video of the show on our Facebook Page: Click Kempton Park Bead Fair 2021.

See us back at Kempton Park in November.

DIANA’S INTERSTELLAR JEWELLERY

Dianna StellarDiana’s been creating wire-wrap and semi-precious stone jewellery since 2004. She used to be a geology and astronomy lecturer in California, although brought up along the Jurassic Coast in Southern England.

Diana ChallisHer love of rocks and astronomy influences her jewellery, with designs like shapes in galaxies and stellar explosions. Britain’s pre-historic and Saxon roots also has an impact on style. All these influences come together in her designs, giving them a powerful organic feel.

Diana ChallisDiana ChallisDiana ChallisDiana say “I wrap wire around and beyond stones, creating pieces based on spiral forms and use of negative space – to make rock and metal appear to defy gravity. The result is a unique style, I think of as ‘nouveau bronze-age’”.

Diana ChallisDiana was in business in the USA for five years, before returning to the UK in 2016 and starting her steampunk jewellery line.

GLASS BEADS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!

Glass beads are very popular for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, anklets and piercing. You can also use them on lamps, head caps and tiaras, even threaded on curtains. Don’t look down on glass!

Glass BeadsGlass are a cheaper alternative to crystal and more available. Therefore there are more shapes and colours in glass – and like gemstones, they come faceted, matte, or high-gloss too. Shapes range from simple designs like spheres, teardrops and leaves, to original and obscure forms.

However, versatility is the key to getting the most from your string – so buy round beads to avoid leftovers.

Glass BeadsGlass beads are available in every colour, especially primary red, green, and clear – to more sparkling colours of aqua, magenta and rose. Many are multi-coloured with a blow effect as can occur on glass vases and beakers.

Mix glass with other beads when designing jewellery. A formal necklace may incorporate a few crystal beads threaded with the glass beads to give an impression of expense and class. However, a more casual look may prefer to incorporate shells or seed beads instead.

Glass BeadsMost glass beads are made out of matte glass, dichroic glass and lamp worked glass. These regular forms of glass beads are relatively cheap to purchase.

Glass BeadsGlass beads can also be found in rare forms of vintage glass from Germany, Japan, Italy and Czechoslovakia. These beads are usually hand made and more expansive – for collectors requiring a rare jewellery. Glass beads, as with many other beads are usually purchased ready holed and are strung on cotton or nylon thread.

What are glass pearls
Glass PearlsGlass PearlsGlass PearlsThese are man-made and coated to give a fantastic glossy eye-catching sheen. Like genuine pearls they have a substantial feel and weight, and are cool to the touch.

Advantage of glass pearls
Glass PearlsThey cost a lot less than real pearls or gemstones, look almost the same, and lack the grooving found in cheaper natural pearls. They are more varied, in different shapes and bright colours like yellow, red, green and blue – as well as sparkling shades like aqua, magenta and rose.

Glass pearls are fantastic for the price!

Mix glass with other beads
Glass BeadsWhen making jewellery, blend glass with gemstones depending on the design. A formal necklace may use a few crystal beads threaded with glass beads to give an impression of style and expense. However, a more casual look might incorporate shells instead.
