Affordable Beads For March Jewellery – aquamarine substitute
March jewellery is traditionally made with aquamarine gemstones. Aquamarine is said to symbolize courage and hope, making it an ideal choice for jewellery to celebrate the month of March.
However, aquamarine is relatively expensive, so if you’re on a budget, you may be looking for other stones and materials that can be substituted to make beautiful March jewellery.
One option is to use glass beads. These come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours, so you can easily find beads that are similar to aquamarine. Glass is also much cheaper, so you can make stunning March jewellery without breaking the bank.
Another option is to use plastic beads. Plastic’s not all bad! Acrylic beads are also available in all sizes and colours that look similar to aquamarine. Plus, they’re extremely affordable, a great choice for budget-conscious jewellery makers.
If you’re looking for a more natural alternative to aquamarine, try using other semi-precious stones to save money. Such as agate, amethyst, and quartz that match the colour of aquamarine, but cost less.
Overall, aquamarine is appealing for making March jewellery, but there’s plenty of other stones and materials that can be substituted. So, if you’re on a budget, you can still make stunning March jewellery without breaking the bank.

Aquamarine – March’s Gemstone
Aquamarine is March’s stone – a blue-green gemstone from South America, meaning Water of the Sea.
Aquamarine lifts spirit, and excellent for meditation, bringing peace and serenity. Use it for your spring jewellery designs.
Folklore says it protects sailors’ and is the treasure of mermaids. The gemstone is also supposed to have powers that reach to land too, helping married couples solve their problems and drive off evil.
Aquamarine is associated with the thymus gland and is very soothing worn as a necklace.
Also thought to help coughs and calm the nerves. The Romans used aquamarine for stomach troubles and believed it could cure liver and throat problems. Aquamarine brings courage, aids quick intellectual response, and protecting the aura.
Colour ranges from a light turquoise blue to a bluish green. Darker blue is the best, greener less valuable. Check the clarity of the stone. Because aquamarine has a light pastel colour, it’s important to be free of flaws or inclusions.
Examine the cut from different angles checking light reflects evenly off the surface of the gem. Aquamarine is usually heat treated and will become paler if left in the sun.
Clean aquamarine in with warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush. As with all gemstones, protect from scratches and sharp blows.

St Patrick’s Day Beads
What Is St Patrick’s Day?
St Patrick’s Day is Thursday 17th March 2022. It celebrates the death of St Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland in the 5th-century.
St Patrick was kidnapped in Roman Britain and brought to Ireland as a slave, at the age of 16. He later escaped and was credited to bringing Christianity to Ireland. The date became a festival started by the Church in 1631.
What’s It Got To Do With Beading?
If you sell jewellery, you need to grasp any opportunity to market your designs. Special dates like this are great for limited edition jewellery because they’re not available all year – and therefore have a sense of exclusivity and urgency.
Best Way To Promote
Drive up excitement in advance before you release your St Patrick’s designs, so the anticipation creates demand. Keep your designs with a green coloured theme.
As the festival holds parties and events all over the Western World, market jewellery that makes the wearer stand out. Think bright green, bold necklace, earrings and bracelets.
Why Is Green The Colour For St Patrick?
Green is in the Irish flag, and symbolises the Emerald Isle and Irish nationalism. Wearing green on St Patrick’s day is said to prevent you being pinched by leprechauns, who won’t be able to see you in this colour!

Harrogate Gem n Bead Fair Report
Everyone loves Harrogate! The past few shows there struggled with lockdowns and heavy snow. This year, at last, was back to normal, busy and good sales. The Saturday was brilliant, with some visiting from two-hours away. We’ll be back weekend 19th August.
After a long Saturday we eat at Zizzi’s Italian near our hotel. Picture is Ilona Biggins and Harriet, with Andrew from Monty’s Beads and Nigel (left to right). MiMi took the pictures!
New Bead Fair Venues
We just love exhibiting at village halls! They’re so easy to access and setup – no ramps, no obstacles, and no hassle. Plus, easy free parking and they all have a kitchen so we can give great refreshments.
Our first new venue is on Sunday 26th March in East Essex, halfway between Brighton and Hastings. At the beautiful village of Alfriston – one of the UK’s most beautiful villages said The Telegraph. Picturesque and steeped in history, nestling in the South Downs Country Park.
