Bead Fair Reports

Norwich Bead Fair
Norwich Bead fair Oct 2021Norwich Bead fair Oct 2021This was the best Norwich fair ever! The hall was packed and we could just about keep up with sales. Many new visitors.

The success of Norwich has brought a new problem – it looks like we have grown out of this hall at the George Hotel. So next year we may have to move to a bigger venue in Norwich.

The Big Bead Show
MrBead at Big Bead 2021Usually this is our best bead fair in attendance and sales. However, although more visitors than any other bead fair, numbers and takings were about 20% down on previous Big Bead Shows.

MrBead at Big Bead 2021Big Bead Show 2021Nevertheless, this was still a bumper show, full of excitement and fun for all. About 34 exhibitors attended, spaced out for social distancing. Almost everyone wore masks.

Citrine For November

Citrine BeadsSunny and affordable, citrine brightens winter jewellery, blending especially well with the yellow gleam of polished gold. Yellow is a natural reviver, and citrine focuses the mind bringing a feeling of self-esteem.

Citrine BeadsIn medication it helps re-establish the link between your conscious and subconscious. If you’re feeling down, hold citrine to lift your spirit.

It’s also good at healing the body and communication. Citrine gives warm energy, promotes optimism, and attracts abundance.

Citrine BeadsCitrine removes negative energy, and  in ancient times it was carried as a protection against snake venom and evil thoughts. Known as a “merchants’ stone”, placed in the cash register to acquire and keep wealth.

Citrine is the birthstone for November with corresponding signs of Gemini, Aries, Libra, and Leo.

Citrine BeadsAlthough the darker orange colours of citrine, have generally been the most valued – today people prefer the bright lemony shades which mix better with pastel colours.

Citrine BraceletSome call citrine topaz quartz – referring to the colour, which is similar to topaz. Since topaz is a separate mineral, this is incorrect. However, citrine is considered an alternative to topaz as the birthstone for November.

As long as citrine is protected from prolonged exposure to light or heat, it will last for years, and it never requires cleansing.

Yellow Topaz

TopazYellow topaz looks very similar to citrine.  The Egyptians thought topaz was coloured with the golden glow of the sun god Ra. This made topaz a very powerful amulet that protected the faithful against harm. The Romans associated topaz with Jupiter: also god of the sun.

Topaz BeadsTopaz sometimes has the amber gold of fine cognac or the blush of a peach and all the beautiful warm browns and oranges. Some rare and exceptional topaz can be pink to sherry red.

Wear topaz only if you wish to be clear-sighted: legend has it that it dispels all enchantment and helps to improve eyesight as well!

Topaz BraceletThe ancient Greeks believed that it increased strength and can make its wearer invisible. Topaz was also said to change colour in the presence of poison. Its mystical curative powers waxed and waned with the phases of the moon: it was said to cure insomnia, asthma, and hemorrhages.

Topaz BeadsBrown, yellow, orange, sherry, red and pink topaz is found in Brazil and Sri Lanka. Pink topaz is found in Pakistan and Russia. Today we also have blue topaz, which has a blue colour created by irradiation.

Topaz BeadsIn early 1998, a new type of enhanced topaz made its appearance, the surface-enhanced topaz, with colours described as blue to greenish-blue or emerald green.  Topaz is a very hard gemstone but it can be split with a single blow – therefore, protect from hard knocks.

HOW TO USE LEFTOVER BEADS – DON’T THROW ANYTHING AWAY!

Using Left Over BeadsEvery beader is eventually left with out-of-fashion beads that they can’t use. You could try selling them at a fair in a bargain box, but in all probability, they’ll be hard to shift. Strangely, people can sense if the stock is stale. Customers’ are looking for new.

Beady BagIn these financially-tough times, you need to consume everything.  Fortunately it is possible to use these odd beads to make jewellery or other products that will sell.

Don’t be afraid to disassemble old jewellery. Unstring the beads and mix them with new beads in a different design

WHAT TO DO WITH THE LEFTOVERS:

1)    Separate all your leftover beads into three different sizes and place each size in its own cup.
2)    Take any bead at random from one of the cups and lay it out for a necklace on your beading board.
3)    Then add a bead from a different size cup, and so on.  If the beads are small, add a few, before a large bead – to build uniformity to the design.
4)   After you’ve laid out half the necklace length, look at the design and see where you can add spacers or caps to improve the style.

In a short time, you’ll end up with an original freeform necklace!

Bead tablecloth weights
Beaded CoverTable cloth or cup weights make great presents, especially for summer BBQs.  Take a silver bulldog clip and thread wire through the hole.

Loop it back on itself, and slide a crimp over both pieces, pulling it tight to the clip. Squash the crimp flat to hold the wire in place.

Thread beads onto both strands of wire and finish with a crimp to hold the beads in place. The weights are then clipped onto the corner of a tablecloth to prevent the wind from blowing it off.

OTHER IDEAS FOR BEAD MAKING:

  • Put individual beads on head pins & make a dangle bracelet.
  • Simple loop earrings.
  • Put them on headpins & attach a jump ring or clasp to make a necklace.
  • Make cell phone charms or key chains from individual beads.
  • Make toggles for bathroom light pulls.
  • Sell larger beads on their own as lucky charms.
  • Christmas tree decorations.
  • Make mobiles to hang in young children’s bedrooms.
  • Beaded serviette holders.
