November Bead Fair Report

This month we attended three fairs. Our last until Harrogate Gem n Bead 16th-17th February 2019.

Cheshire Bead Fair: 4th Nov
Exhibiting at Cheshire Bead Fair feels like wearing an old pair of shoes.

The show’s been going for over 20-years, and both buyers and sellers are old school friendly. Northern folk still hold doors’ open and hug friends.

92 year old beader!Nice show with good attendance. We love one-day fairs – easy to setup, easy to sell, and easy to leave.

You’re never too old to bead – picture show 92-year old May, who always visits us when we’re up North. Not only does she look 20-years younger, she speaks clear and fast, and never uses a stick! Maybe the secret is her 4-days-a-week in the gym.

Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair: 10th-11th Nov
This was the last of the four Kempton shows of the year. Always the best: more exhibitors, more visitors, and more sales!

This one was no exception – it was heaving, both days. For £900 to exhibit, our space was really cramped, but oh I wish all Gem n Bead Fairs were as busy!

Brighton Gem n Bead Fair: 17th-18th Nov

Brighton is always nice to do. Maybe it’s the atmospheric time of year for these fairs (it was snow in the spring), maybe the rugged cliffs on the coast, or maybe the big hall giving us space to breathe? Or maybe we like Brighton because we always do well. It feels relaxing and refreshing after Kempton Park. A great show.

Susan Wainwright Jewellery

Sue Wainwright JewellerySusan Wainwright switched being an architect to jewellery designer. She has worked in silver all her life as a hobby, now Sue has more time to pursue her passion.

Susan WainwrightShe specialises in quality silver designs dotted sparingly with gemstone beads – created from her workshop in Camberwell, South London.

Original design, allows her to sell at prices higher than most crafters.

Pieces are made in layers separated and joined by hidden tube spacers. Sue then creates matching themes of necklaces, pendants, brooches and bangles.

Icicle NecklaceOriginality and excellence is the aim, with the style dominating gold and black. Pieces are commissioned or developed in discussion with clients. As they are all hand made every piece is unique.

The creative community around her workshop holds regular open-studio events where new pieces can be viewed. For details see Sue’s website at http://www.suewainwrightsilver.co.uk.

Lean from Susan Wainwright’s designs to inspire you to make creative jewellery that will sell well.

Buyers are on the lookout for original designs for presents this Christmas. If your jewellery is different, people will pay a premium.

Susan’s designs use MrBead hematite and icicle beads:

Mr & Mrs Bead’s November Break

I don’t want to bore, but some readers’ say they like to hear what we get up to. Despite what many believe, most of our travels are business.

So after 29 bead fairs, MiMi and I booked a trip around Portugal after Brighton Gem n Bead. This was last chance to leave the UK before the Home Office holds Mi Mi’s passport for her visa renewal.

Nigel in the AlgarveMiMi in the AlgarveStansted Ryan Air to Porto for 2-days, train to Lisbon for 2-nights, a night in the Moorish mountains of Sintra – then train down to Lagos in the Algarve for 2-more nights and back from Faro.

MiMi in AlgareNice to get away, but I think we were a little late for Europe – cold and wet most days!

Nothing like Hong Kong, where I’d still be sea swimming until Christmas. Bit disappointed in the food too: no fresh seafood, despite nearby sea.

PortoNice culture all over  I love narrow cobbled streets and old buildings. But the weather spoilt eating outside. Super cheap trains and they leave on time.

We poked our noise in a bead shop in Porto. Lot of beads, but many strings are exactly the same designs we sell, but at more than double the price.

As always in Mainland Europe, over-taxation makes everything expensive, resulting in empty shops. Opposite to China.

Rock & Mineral Show, Wetherby

We won’t be there, but if you’re local, this fair is worth a visit – full details Rock & Mineral Show. Minerals, fossils, meteorites, crystals, jewelery, beads and much more!

Only £3 entry:  Saturday 15th December 10am to 5pm, Wetherby Racecourse.
