New Forest & Cornish Bead fair Reports

New Forest Bead Fair

New Forest Bead FairNew Forest Bead FairBrockenhurstThis was our first show at Brockenhurst in the New Forest, and it went phenomenally well – it was packed out. We didn’t have a second free! Crafters came from as far as two-hours away to see our latest beads in this beautiful New Forest village.

We’ll be back in the New Forest on Sunday 16th October 2022 – so don’t miss out if your Down South.

Cornish Bead Fair – Probus
Cornish Bead Fair Cornish Bead FairOur busiest Cornish Show yet. Another hectic day. We had many new buyers from all over Cornwall, with some from further afield. We love it in Cornwall and enjoyed a few days holiday down there between the two southern bead fairs.

We’ll be back at another Cornish Bead Fair soon in Wadebridge on Saturday 3rd September 2022. The following day, Sunday 4th September, we plan to hold another bead fair in South Wales on our way back to Norwich.

Understanding Bead Sizes

Bead SizesAll beads, except seed beads, are measured in mm and strings in inches. If you’re unsure of a bead size, check with calipers, a bead measure or ruler.

Sometimes it’s difficult to decide what size bead to use. As a guide:
• 4mm for dainty, delicate jewellery – small bracelets, anklets, and light necklaces.
• 6mm is the most common size for bracelets, earrings and necklaces.
• 8mm is ideal for all jewellery, standing out, but a little heaver than smaller sizes.
• 10mm is for more of a statement or on a chunky bracelet.
• 12mm is for big bold necklaces or earrings.
• 14mm and larger for focal beads used sparingly on statement necklaces or earrings.

Then some say we’ve sent the wrong size and our 4mm beads look bigger on the screen! We try to be as accurate as possible, but you can’t tell dimensions from photographs.

Sizes can either be exact or approximate. Simple round bead sizes should be exact: 4mm, 6mm, 8mm etc. Chip and nugget beads, being naturally different sizes, will not be exactly the measurements quoted – some will be longer, but most will be smaller.

Same with pearls. Sellers usually quote the largest size in the string, especially true with natural pearls. Under 25% in the centre of the string may be the full size quoted.

YELLOW BEADS FOR SUMMER Jewellery

Yellow BeadsThe colours you choose reveal what’s in your head and your innermost feelings and emotions. They’re part of your personality. It’s likely you have one favourite colour.

Yellow BeadsHowever, when you design jewellery for profit, don’t let personal likes influence what you make. Look into fashion and put popular colours together. This will help your sales.

Citrine BeadsShell BraceletYellow is in fashion for summer 2022. Vincent Van Gogh said “How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun”. Yellow draws attention and makes people feel cheerful and energized – but too much is aggressive and irritating, so don’t overdo it.

Ruby – July’s Birthstone

Ruby

Like a perfect red rose, the Ruby’s rich colour speaks of love and passion. July’s birthstone is among the most highly prized of gems throughout history.

Ruby was considered to have magical powers, and worn by royalty as a talisman against evil. It was thought to grow darker when danger was imminent, and to return to its original colour once safe. Ruby is the hardest mineral after diamond.

ruby beadsThe word Ruby comes from the Latin “ruber,” meaning red.  It comes in hues from an orangey red to a purplish red, but the best are a true red – and is called a sapphire in any colour other than red.

Rubies were thought to represent heat and power. Ancient tribes used the gem as bullets for blowguns, and it was said that a ruby would boil water instantly.

Ruby BeadsIt has been said that the ruby’s red glow comes from an eternal flame, making a gift of this stone symbolic of everlasting love.  Powdered ruby was used as a cure for indigestion, and if worn on the left hand, ancient lore has it that the ruby will bring good fortune.

Ruby is very expensive, so it’s not so popular with our customers. Expect to pay over £50 a string.

Onyx – July’s Alternate Stone

The Romans, Italians and Hebrew all have a different gemstone for July – Onyx.

Onyx BeadsOnyx is a term used for several stones. It has been dyed since ancient time, with the popular pure black variety, being dyed microcrystalline quartz. Its natural colour is brown, white or grey.

Onyx used in architecture isn’t a form of quartz at all, but a type of limestone marble. Onyx is very similar to agate. With straight bands of brown, white or black, where agate has curved bands of many colours.

Onyx BeadsAlthough regarded as protective, onyx has a reputation as a stone of discord. Onyx was worn to cool the ardors of love, probably because it helps to balance the mind and emotions. Not only avoided by lovers, but also at night, as it provoked nightmares.

Onyx BeadsHowever, it does improve concentration and devotion, hence many onyx rosaries.

Onyx is a strength-giving stone, aiding confidence and useful for athletes or people under stress. Its energy is a mental tonic and can help you cope with fears and worries, making you feel in harmony with your surroundings.
