Crafting Seaside Jewellery – Bringing the Ocean to Life

seaside jewelleryThere’s something captivating about the sea. The sparkle of the waves. The smoothness of sea glass. The whisper of shells, and the mystery of what washes ashore.

Seaside JewellerySeaside JewellerySeaside jewellery captures that magic. Blending natural elements with creativity, to craft one-of-a-kind pieces that evoke the spirit of the coast. A deeply satisfying way to turn treasures from the shore into wearable art.

Why Make Seaside Jewellery?
Summer Beadsstarfish beadsSeaside jewellery isn’t just beautiful—it’s meaningful. Each shell, stone, or piece of driftwood holds memories of tides and travels. For many, it’s a personal expression of their love for the ocean. For others, it’s a sustainable and creative use of found materials.

From a practical standpoint, seaside jewellery also:
• Makes use of free or inexpensive materials,
• Offers a sustainable alternative to mined gems and metals,
• Appeals to a broad market for those interested in coastal or nature-inspired accessories.

Materials You Can Use
shell braceletThe beauty of seaside jewellery lies in its organic, weathered charm. Natural materials like: Sea Glass, Shells, Driftwood, Pebbles or Stones and Coral

bead findingsYou can also include sterling silver or brass findings, leather or waxed cotton cord, beads, pearls, or crystals, or resin for encasing tiny items or preserving fragile finds.

Getting Started – Simple Project Ideas
1. Shell Pendant Necklace
Choose a shell with a natural hole or drill one near the top. Thread it on a silver jump ring and hang it from a leather cord or chain.

2. Sea Glass Earrings
Wrap small pieces of sea glass in silver wire and attach them to earring hooks. Use complementary colours for a coastal palette.

3. Resin Beach Scene Pendant
Pour clear resin into a mold with tiny shells, sand, and a sprinkle of glitter to create a “snapshot” of the beach.

4. Driftwood Bracelet
Drill small holes into a lightweight piece of driftwood and attach it with hemp cord or leather straps for a rustic cuff.

Conclusion
shell braceletMaking seaside jewellery is more than a craft. It’s a way of preserving the rhythm of the tides. The colours of the sea, and the feeling of salt in the air. Whether you’re creating gifts, selling your work, or simply capturing your love for the ocean, each piece becomes a miniature memory. So next time you walk the shoreline, look down. The sea may have delivered your next design.

Bead Fair Report

Norwich Bead Fair
Norwich Bead FairNorwich Bead FairNorwich was very busy for the first two hours, than slowed. Overall, quieter than usual. Maybe because a lot were on holiday? Or maybe because there was a lot on in the city that weekend? The powerful new air-conditioners were so cold, we had to get them turned down! We’ll be back at this popular show on Sunday 12th October. Lorraine Cannell of The Bead Queen (above), was delighted with a big jewellery sale.

PERIDOT: THE COOLING GEMSTONE FOR AUGUST

Peridot BeadsThe name Peridot sounds summer cooling. Its vivid, shimmering aqua-green colour is the ideal gemstone to complement a light summertime outfit.

Peridot BeadsPeridot (pronounced pair-a-doe) is the gem variety of olivine. A mineral formed under intense heat. Named from the French word Peridot, meaning unclear, due to its inclusions and cloudy nature – or the Greek Peridona, meaning ‘giving plenty’.

Peridot chip beads

Small crystals of peridot are found in rocks by volcanoes. Because the iron which creates the colour is an integral part of its structure, its colour is always green – ranging from transparent lime to olive green. One of the few gemstones with only one colour and is always small beads.

Peridot BeadsPeridot has been mined for thousands of years. Said to be the favourite gem of Cleopatra, and mentioned in the Bible. In ancient Egypt it was mined at night because legend tells that peridot was hard to see during the day.

Peridot BeadsPeridot has been confused with emerald and many jewellers refer to it as “evening emerald”. Peridot was later used to decorate medieval churches, carried back to Europe by the Crusaders, like the huge stones of more than 200 carats in size at Cologne Cathedral.

Peridot is recommended for insomnia, digestive problems and to stimulate the mind. Some say it can repel evil spirits.  Peridot is for people with the star sign of Leo.

PERIDOT & PEARL NECKLACE

Peridot Necklace

Peridot & pearl go so well together – teardrops of the moon goddess! This necklace is to inspire what can be done using a combination of different stones.

Blue pearls with vivid green peridot make a striking fresh combination to cool you from the summer heat.

Clusters of pale-blue 7mm rice pearls are wrapped with 4mm peridot beads producing this 16″ -18″ long necklace with a lobster clasp.

CARNELIAN – ANOTHER GEMSTONE FOR AUGUST

Carnelian Beads

This flesh-coloured stone comes from the quartz family, and is usually bright orange to reddish orange, translucent to clear. However, it can also be green or yellow.

Carnelian Beads

Carnelian has many ancient beliefs, like protection during travel after death and against evil. It’s also said to calm bad tempers!

The name comes from the Latin word “Carnis” meaning flesh. The Roman thought that the darker Carnelian represented males and the lighter, females. Many believe that it creates a bond with man and nature.

Carnelian Beads

Carnelian is for confidence. Thought to help blood disorders and remove toxins. Carnelian is in tune with the energies of the Earth. Making you feel comfortable with your environment, able to pause and reflect, and feeling secure.

Carnelain BeadsCarnelian stimulates the reproductive organs too; hence its long use as a fertility symbol. Also said to help creativity, have a clearing effect and repel negative energy.

Green carnelian beads

A good stone for people starting new projects or who feel they are going nowhere. It motivates, allowing you to find the energy to make the most out of life. Carnelian is best for people with the zodiac sign of Leo, and for those born on a Friday.
