Summer Bead Fair Report

Nine more shows this year – all good!

Bath & West Gem n Bead Fair: 12th-13th May
Not too bad for a Gem n Bead, average takings, but no more than we do on a one day fair. Pity Gem n Bead take three days (we setup on the Friday) – it takes a lot out of the week, wasting time.

Great rural venue though. MiMi and I stayed down West for a few days break before the Devon Bead Fair the following weekend.

Devon Bead Fair: 20th May
Devon Bead Fair 2017A beautifully organised show at a stunning venue: Exeter Castle. It’s always sunny on this one, with a party atmosphere outside: BBQ and all! Footfall slightly down on the previous year, perhaps because of Bath & West so close and just a week ahead.

Wood Green (Cambridgeshire) Gem n Bead Fair: 9th-10th June
We had a massive display as so much space in this huge venue. Pity they’re knocking it down. Next year we’ll be close by at another hall.

Again, average takings for a Gem n Bead, but not bad and a lot of fun camping with BBQ by the river.

Cornish Probus MrBead Show – 17th June
A little quieter than last year, but nice village hall with easy access. We stayed a few extra days in Padstow after the show.

See us next Sunday in Wadebridge along with Southampton Bead Shop, back in Cornwall. The problem with Cornwall is leaving: it’s too nice there!

Norwich Bead Fair: 1st July
Not so many as our previous spring show in Norwich, but quite busy as always.  A nice show, especially with air conditioning and new hotel decor. Some of the other venues can get rather hot! See us again in Norwich on Sunday 14th October.

Kempton Park Gem n Bead Fair: 28th-29th July
Originally, we weren’t going to do this one as it was only two-days after we retuned from Hong Kong. However, after two Gem n Bead Fairs either cancelled or dates changed, we decided to slot it in. And pleased we did!

Better than our previous Kempton, but a big problem in the Travelodge Hotel nearby: no A/C.  Usually not an issue in the UK, but this was on one of the hottest weekends’ of the year. Even after two cold showers, I couldn’t sleep! However, the jet-lag was an advantage, helping to wake early.

Harrogate Gem n Bead Fair: 11th-12th August
Our best Gem n Bead Fair ever, despite being moved into two small halls at the Pavillians.  Lots of visitors and busy all the time, both days – unusual for a Gem n Bead. I guess ales were boosted by a lot of new stock just brought back from China.

Berwick-Upon-Tweed MrBead Bead Show: 18th August
Very good, although helped by our good friends Rod & Karen from Berrydin Books in Berwick. They do so much!

It’s amazing how people find us out in this somewhat isolated village hall: we even had a few visitors from Edinburgh. I guess with satnav and the internet, visitors can drive anywhere.

As usual we stayed up North from Harrogate, and had a great time camping right opposite  the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where we visited on the Friday. Nice evening BBQ, with late sun. My friend (who also used to live in Hong Kong), Dentist, helped out on the two shows this weekend.

Perth MrBead Bead Fair: 19th August
As the 10-year-running Perth Bead Fair is now finished, we thought it a good idea to hold our own on the same date, especially as we’re around that way. Held in the Queen’s Hotel, rather than the Concert Hall. Nice venue, but hard work humping everything up the tiny lift for a first-floor hall.

However, we done well, and nice to share with Johnney from Southampton Bead Shop. He works too hard! Like the old days of Edinburgh Bead Fair: he drove all the way back home, arriving in Southampton around 1.30am (despite booking a hotel along the way).

You can see his display of Czech, Japanese Mijuki and Swarovski beads, along with Carol Mcalister’s hand-made glass beads next week at our Cornish Bead fair in Wadebridge.

SEPTEMBER’S GEMSTONE

Sapphire is the birthstone for September, and is chemically and structurally the same as ruby, an aluminum oxide. However, where rubies are only red, sapphires come in every color but red: blue, golden yellow, reddish-orange, or violet.

We have some sapphire beads at our bead show, but generally Sapphire is too expensive for most crafters, so a great alternative for September is blue chalcedony – which can look similar at a fraction of the cost. Chalcedony is a very fine-grained variety of quartz with a waxy luster with a compact fibrous structure.

Alternate Gemstone For September: Chalcedony

ChalcedonyNatural chalcedony is usually grayish blue and sometimes with hints of pink, however it can be color enhanced to light blue. It is said that chalcedony was used as a sacred stone by the Native Americas, promoting stability within the ceremonial activities of the tribe.

chalcedony BeadsChalcedony is thought to augment emotional balance, vitality, stamina, endurance, kindness, charity and friendliness. It also supposedly alleviates hostilities, irritability and melancholy.
