August-2020

Chain Jewellery, Peridot, Carnelian Beads & Shapes

26th July 2020

It’s still too early to know when our next fair will be. I can’t get through to venues at Perth or Haydock, but it does look like larger shows won’t be allowed until 1st October.

However, smaller halls have confirmed OK – see at  2020 Bead Fairs. Social distancing & other measures will be in place for your protection.

The new MrBead shop is live and doing well. The old stores will continue to operate alongside.

Chain Jewellery

What Is Chain Jewellery?
Jewellery ChainChain jewellery isn’t new, but the trend’s increasing. This year it’s in fashion with many models wearing the style.

Chain adds a new dimension to your designs. It’s versatile: available in any length, with many thickness, shapes and materials.

Jewellery ChainChain can be used on its own, creating a classic look to add attention to a pendant – or they can be decorated with small beads and findings for more effect.

Chunky chain creates a statement in itself. Bold and punkish. While tiny delicate chain is more subtle, for a lighter, elegant, graceful design.

Types Of Chain
• Trace Chain – has small oval links creating a minimalist chin that won’t distract to your jewellery design. One of the most popular and versatile styles.
• Belcher Chain – similar to trace, but with wider and thicker links. For a bolder effect.
• Bead Chain – as the name implies: this is chain with tiny beads already attached. Ready-made for an elegant stylish design.
• Figaro Chain – has flattened rings, with 3 shorter links separated by a longer link.

Choose Beads By Shape

Not all beads are round. Hard stone can be carved into almost any shape, although many are cut to similar facets as natural crystal gems like diamonds.

These faceted beads need not be round either – they can be made oval, square, rhombus, and a whole range of other forms. Beads of differing shape add interest to the design of a necklace or bracelet.

Getting to know the various shapes will really help you as a beader. As you can see below, there are far more shapes than you may initially have thought. Getting the perfect beads will really improve your jewellery making skills.

Beads are a really versatile material that can be used for so much. You can make everything from bracelets to beaded bags. It’s really satisfying to create your own piece of jewellery and if you give it as a gift to friends and family it is something they can treasure forever.

If you are a professional beader you’re able to create things to sell in markets, shops or online. We hope seeing the collection of beads below, you will feel inspired and start getting creative.

Many shapes are obvious like “heart” or “leaf” – but others, like “briolette” or “rombus” are not so well know. As a beader, you should familiarize yourself to the standard shapes available, so you know what you will be getting without looking at a picture.

Don’t forget beads are three-dimensional: so round or oval can also be flat or puff. Pillow can be rectangle or square, and nugget can be almost any shape not uniform (sometimes called freeform).

Peridot: The Cooling Gemstone For August

Peridot Beads

Just the name Peridot sounds summer cooling, and its vivid, shimmering aqua-green colour is the ideal gemstone to complement a light summertime outfit.

Peridot goes well with any light colour, blending subtly to add interest to a design.

Peridot (pronounced pair-a-doe) is the gem variety of olivine, a mineral formed under intense heat. Perhaps named from the French word Peridot, meaning unclear, due to its inclusions and cloudy nature.

Peridot chip beads

Small crystals of peridot are often found in rocks by volcanoes and in meteors. Because the iron which creates the colour is an integral part of its structure, its colour is always green – ranging from transparent lime to olive green. One of the few gemstones with only one colour.

Peridot has been mined as a gemstone for thousands of years, said to be the favourite gem of Cleopatra, and mentioned in the Bible. In ancient Egypt it was mined at night because legend tells that peridot was hard to see during the day.

Peridot has been confused with emerald and many jewellers refer to it as “evening emerald”. Peridot was later used to decorate medieval churches, carried back to Europe by the Crusaders, like the huge stones of more than 200 carats in size at Cologne Cathedral.

Peridot Beads

The gemstone is sometimes called Chrysolith (from the Greek word Goldstone and Olivin), because Peridot is the gemstone variety of the Olivin mineral. In the gemstone trade it’s generally called Peridot – a name derived from the Greek Peridona, meaning ‘giving plenty’.

Peridot is recommended for insomnia, digestive problems and to stimulate the mind. Some say it can repel evil spirits, intensified when the stone is set in gold. And it’s also said to strengthen the power of any medicine drunk from peridot goblets. Peridot is for people with the star sign of Leo.

Carnelian – Another Gemstone For August

Carnelian Beads

This flesh-coloured stone comes from the quartz family, and is usually bright orange to reddish orange, translucent to clear. However, it can be other colours like green or yellow.

Carnelian Beads

Carnelian has many ancient beliefs, like protection during travel after death and against evil. It’s also said to calm bad tempers!

The name comes from the Latin word “Carnis” meaning flesh. The Roman thought that the darker Carnelian represented males and the lighter, females. Many believe that it creates a bond with man and nature.

Carnelian Beads

Carnelian is for confidence. Thought to help blood disorders and remove toxins. Carnelian is in tune with the energies of the Earth. Making you feel comfortable with your environment, able to pause and reflect, and feeling secure.

Carnelian stimulates the reproductive organs too; hence its long use as a fertility symbol. It’s also said to help creativity and have a clearing effect, replacing negative energy with positive. Making it easier to find direction and feel in control of your life.

Green carnelian beads

A good stone for people starting new projects or who feel they are going nowhere. It motivates, allowing you to find the energy to make the most out of life. Carnelian is best for people with the zodiac sign of Leo, and for those born on a Friday.
